About the Project

Surname Focus: BARTEE - BARTIE - BARTY - BERTIE - BERTY

Purpose

The Bartee Name Study's WikiTree project pages serve as a collaborative platform to collect, interpret, and disseminate information on the project's targeted surnames (BARTEE - BARTIE - BARTY - BERTIE - BERTY). Researchers, family genealogists, or any interested parties are invited to join the study and help make it a valuable reference point for all who have an interest in these names.

History

The WikiTree project page for The Bartee Name Study was launched on February 20, 2022 with the goals of 1) discovering the connections of various Bartee branches in the United States, and 2) locating the country of origin for the first known Bartee in North America, Robert Bartee (bef.1667-bef.1710).

Although the project originally focused on the Bartee and Bartie versions of the name, it was soon expanded to include Barty when Y-DNA testing revealed a connection between a long established Bartee line in North America and an Australian Barty line extending back to Scotland. See Bartee Y-DNA for more information.

Most recently added are the names Bertie and Berty. The similarity of the Bertie name has long been noted by Bartee/Bartie researchers. In 1722 a Bertie County was created in North Carolina. This county was named for James Bertie (1673-1735) and his brother Henry Bertie MP (abt.1675-1735), two of the eight Lord Proprietors whom King Charles II granted land under the Carolina charters of 1663 and 1665. Early records sometimes misspell this county name as either Bartie or Bartee, and this demonstrates how easily a Bartee/Bartie/Bertie surname could change. Both the Bertie and Bartie surnames are found in the same localities within Scotland and the UK. Further study will be required by researchers of those areas to determine if there is any connection between the two surnames.

Surname Variant Preference By Locality

BARTEE - BARTIE - BARTY - BERTIE OR BERTY?

There seems to be some preference over which version of the surname is used based upon geographic location. While the name sometimes appears as Bartie in records of Colonial America and, later, the United States, it predominantly appears as Bartee in that region. This was the preferred spelling used by the descendants of Robert Bartee and passed down through those family lines. Both of the versions, Bartie and Barty, seem to be the preferred spelling outside of North America, with Bartee appearing rarely, if at all.

The following chart was compiled from a list of 162,253 surnames that frequently appeared in the US 2010 Census. (Frequently Occurring Surnames from the 2010 Census; https://www.census.gov/topics/population/genealogy/data/2010_surnames.html) To make the list a surname must have appeared at least 100 times in the national census. Just for fun and as a comparison, the #1 ranking name, Smith, with over 2.4 million occurrences has been included to demonstrate the rarity of our project's focus surnames.

2010 US Census
Surname Rank # of Occurrences
Smith 1 2,442,977
Bartee 10,396 3,099
Bartie 69,996 280
Barty not ranked unknown - under 100
Bertie 90,495 204
Berty 135,593 124

NOTE: If you know of a similar list of surname frequencies from other countries, particularly Scotland, UK, and Australia please share here or send information to the project coordinatior.

How to Join

If after browsing the project pages you wish to participate with the study, add your name to the Project Members section below. You may also send a request to the Name Study Coordinator: Linda Mearse.

Your level of participation is entirely up to you and may be as simple or as complex as you choose. You may work independently or with others. You may use some of the suggestions listed here or pursue a topic of your own choosing. All that is asked is for you to somehow improve the presence of BARTEE - BARTIE - BARTY - BERTIE - BERTY profiles on WikiTree.

After joining the study you may show your project affiliation by placing this ONS Member Sticker on your personal profile page:

... ... ... is a member of the Bartee Name Study Project.
{{Member|ONS|name=Bartee}}

Copy the sticker code found in the grey area under the sample sticker pictured above, and then paste this code in the biography portion of your profile. It should appear anywhere below the == Biography == heading and above the == Sources == heading.

What You Can Do

  • If you wish, add the Bartee Name Study sticker to the Bartee profiles you manage. (Some profile managers do not like stickers on the profiles they manage and an alternative is given below.) Directions: Copy the code in the grey box under the sticker and place it anywhere in the biography part of the profile (it should always be below the == Biography == heading and above the == Sources == heading).
This profile is part of the Bartee Name Study.
{{One Name Study|name=Bartee}}

  • As an alternative to the above sticker, use the category code [[Category:Bartee Name Study]]. This adds the profile automatically to the page that maintains a list of all profiles within the study. Copy and paste that line immediately above the == Biography == line of the relevant profiles. This will include the profile in the Study in an unobtrusive way. At this time, relevant profiles are: those born or adopted with the surname or any of its variant spellings. It does not include the temporary LNAB for enslaved individuals, but does include former enslaved individuals who maintain the use of the surname after emancipation. At this time it also does not include those who marry into the surname...if the need arises the project may expand to include those.
  • Add Bartee profiles to WikiTree and work cooperatively with other Bartee profile managers to create the best Bartee tree possible.
  • Add (or update) sources to Bartee profiles using original rather than derivative documentation. See the following link for what is considered Reliable Sources per WikiTree standards: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:United_States_Project_Reliable_Sources. Please do not cite a user-contributed Ancestry.com Tree or FamilySearch Tree as a source. These trees may have some good data and approved sources attached to them. If a tree cites reliable sources, find those sources and if the data checks out, cite that source for the information. Use the section below "Resources on WikiTree" to find unsourced profiles. Once you have a reliable source, the app WikiTree Sourcer takes the pain out of creating citations...a couple of mouse clicks and done!
  • Write comprehensive, well-sourced biographies for Bartee profiles. When a profile page is in edit mode there is a good basic auto-generated biography section you may utilize. Play with the options to find your preferences. There are also apps/extensions which will generate quick biographies for you.
  • Add your photos to Bartee profiles. PLEASE! We all love to see photos.
  • If you are a male with the Bartee surname or a variant and haven't already, please consider testing your Y-DNA and joining the Bartee Origins surname group at FTDNA. https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/bartee/about (development note: embed link)

Research/Project Pages

Here are some of the current research/project pages included in the study. Your help is welcomed!

  • Bartees in Census Records - add census data tables to profiles (see example below). These tables are quickly and easily created from a census page by the app WikiTree Sourcer - 2 clicks and copy/paste is all that is required. These tables make it very easy to spot differences from one census to another. Add profile pages for individuals found on the census who do not yet have one.

I am a member of the BARTEE one name group.

All the material on the Australia, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom are my direct relations. I have been to Scotland three times to research my family BARTY Lineage. I have not given permission for anyone to use my photographs or paperwork, but I am now seeing it everywhere. I had also done my DNA This one name tree BARTEE that has been used by Linda Mearse is my researched information over many, many years. Firstly, I opened my private tree to Linda Mearse, and all (BARTY, BARTEE, BARTIE, BARTEY etc) was put up and used without my permission. I had opened my private tree and it was all used for the BARTEE ONE NAME tree. I have given permission for my material to be used, as I would like to find out more on the BARTY LINEAGE. BUT, I would like recognition for the One Name Tree BARTEE as the DNA and research material in the countries other than some USA are mine. If you look into it you will see all of my material has been used. If you have a look you will see it is mine. How can I have my name put on this one name tree? Thank you Jeanette Harper née BARTY Deakin, Australia

Hello Jeanette,

First of all, welcome to WikiTree. I am very pleased to see you have joined the community as I suggested. It has not been requested of me and I hope I am not taking liberties, but since you are participating with the One Name Study via FTDNA, now have a WikiTree ID, and expressed yourself as a member in your message, I will add your ID to the members list here. If this is not your wish, please let me know and I will rectify that.

Very pleased to have someone who has devoted so much time and effort to researching the Bartee name and all its variations (Barty, Bartie, Bartey, etc.) participating and sharing their knowledge. Acting as the administrator for the FTDNA Bartee Y-DNA project, I am prohibited from identifying DNA kits with living persons as I have previously explained. It is a big pain, but understandable. After you gave your permission to be identified with your deceased brother’s kit, I was able to do so, and an acknowledgement was placed with the Bartee Y-DNA study page, both connecting you with his kit and as a major researcher.

Again, please do not think I am claiming to own, or seek credit for any of the research coming through the FTDNA project or here on WikiTree. The profiles on WikiTree are created by many different researchers. I am a coordinator/administrator for the Bartee study. Although, I will admit to having spent many hours over many years seeking our family history, lol. You kindly offered to open your private Ancestry.com family tree to me, but something happened in that process and I was never able to view it. Your Ancestry tree is still listed as private and I have no access to it. I have not copied any information from it. As the administrator for the FTDNA Y-DNA project, I did receive a copy of your direct paternal line with birth and death dates for your Barty ancestors and passed that on to the project members, as I also did with their paternal lines. I’m sorry if you thought that was me claiming to have done the research.

You also sent a copy of the wonderful report with photos you prepared about your trip to Scotland researching your Barty ancestors. You are correct it can be found online connected to some Ancestry family trees belonging to others, but that is not from me. I would love to see it added to the Bartee Name Study here at WikiTree but will not do that without your permission. There is an email from you in which you **may** have given me permission to do so, but I wasn’t completely positive that was what you were referring to. If so, please reply here publicly by referring to it as the “Scotland Trip Report”. Also, it contains your phone number. Would you like to leave the phone number visible on the report, or would you like to have that blotted out?

Finally, let me add, as time allows, I do work on **all** Bartee/Barty/Bartie etc. lines. If someone digs into the “changes file” they may spot an item I have added to a WikiTree profile which is connected to their direct family line. Be assured, I NEVER just copy published family trees, even if it is from a trusted researcher like yourself. I simply don’t trust them. You will ALWAYS see a citation referring to a census record, marriage document, etc. attached to those items. That doesn’t mean I won’t check published family trees from time to time as hints or to see if my research aligns. As genealogists, we can ALL identify with Sir Isaac Newton’s statement (although I don’t believe the thought originated with him): “If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Please give your permission to add your “Scotland Trip Report”…that will truly make obvious all your efforts and hard work on the discoveries of our shared Bartee/Barty/Bartie, etc. heritage, even if there is some overlap of research among all those researching this family line.

EDIT: Jeanette, you are listed as "anonymous" and your ID # is not available. You will need to share that if you wish it to appear in the membership list so others may contact you.

Sincerely, Linda Mearse
